Dear Sir,
Are Dhaka’s footpaths really for pedestrians? In many areas of the capital, hawkers’ shops, parked cars and various goods occupy footpaths, forcing people to walk on main roads. Speeding vehicles make this dangerous, and even a moment’s carelessness can lead to accidents.
Such scenes are common around Eden Women’s College, Dhaka College and other busy areas. Footpath occupation in places such as New Market and Gulistan also worsens traffic congestion. The livelihood of hawkers is important, but it cannot come at the cost of pedestrian safety.
The authorities should designate specific hawker zones, monitor them regularly and keep footpaths free from illegal occupation. Citizens should also avoid parking or placing goods on footpaths and inform the concerned authorities about misuse. Providing designated spaces for hawkers can help protect both livelihoods and pedestrian safety. Safe walking is not a luxury; it is a citizen’s right.
