Overcoming diplomatic airspace complications with Pakistan, the latest consignment of uranium fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is arriving in Bangladesh from Russia today, Friday (October 2).
A special cargo aircraft carrying the nuclear fuel is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by noon.
A senior official associated with the project confirmed that the cargo will be transported to the plant site in Ishwardi, Pabna, on Saturday (October 3) under stringent security measures.
The shipment was originally scheduled to arrive on Thursday (October 1) but faced last-minute flight cancellations after Pakistan denied permission for the cargo aircraft to use its airspace, necessitating route adjustments.
According to project sources, the nuclear material will be delivered in nine separate consignments by December—seven designated for the commissioning of Unit-2 and two for the refueling of Unit-1.
If the setup proceeds as scheduled, the country's sole nuclear power facility is expected to supply an initial 200 to 300 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by December 2026.
