A legal notice has been served seeking the permanent removal of “socialism” and “secularism” from the Constitution of Bangladesh amid the ongoing constitutional reform process.
Lawyer Md Mahmudul Hasan Mamun served the notice on Thursday (October 1), addressing the secretaries of the President’s Office, Parliament Secretariat, Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
The notice reportedly called for the removal of the two principles from the Constitution’s preamble and fundamental principles, arguing that they are outdated and contrary to the country’s economic development and democratic aspirations.
It also claimed that the constitutional reference to socialism creates concerns among foreign investors about possible nationalisation of private businesses and discourages investment in Bangladesh.
The notice demanded that necessary legal and constitutional steps be taken within 90 days to amend the Constitution and remove “socialism” and “secularism” through a national referendum.
The lawyer also said he would file a writ petition with the High Court if the demands are not addressed.
