State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad has said the renewal of the Farakka Treaty with India will follow the approach taken during the 1977 agreement under Ziaur Rahman.

He made the remarks on Saturday after inaugurating the Nongor River Camp in Tetulia, Panchagarh, and inspecting the Mahananda River area.

Azad said the 30-year Farakka Treaty was being given special importance as its term had expired, and an initiative had been taken to renew it. A technical committee is working on the matter, he said.

He said Bangladesh has 54 transboundary rivers with India and three with Myanmar. The government is working to ensure Bangladesh’s fair share of water from these rivers, he added.

The state minister also said no political considerations would be taken into account in recovering rivers and canals. There would be no scope for reoccupation of rivers, canals and water bodies that have been dredged or restored, he said.

Earlier, Azad visited the border area along the Mahananda River and handed over the Nongor River Camp flag to organisers, formally inaugurating the programme. He later attended a discussion at the Tetulia Upazila Parishad conference room.

Nongor Bangladesh said its river and environmental campaign would be conducted in phases across different districts before concluding in Teknaf.
