The temporary bus depot in Sector 3 of Purbachal Sub-town has begun yielding positive results in decongesting the long-troubled Mohakhali Bus Terminal and its surrounding avenues in the capital.
Idle long-distance buses operating on northern and north-eastern routes are now voluntarily parking at the Gutiyaba facility in Purbachal instead of choking the streets near Mohakhali.
Inaugurated on July 15 to address severe traffic gridlocks at the 200-bus capacity Mohakhali terminal, the initiative initially faced slow adoption. However, following recent infrastructure upgrades by authorities—including driver rest areas, washrooms, dining options, workshop services, and heightened police security—the depot now hosts an average of 150 to 200 buses daily.
Under the current operational framework, long-distance buses park at the Purbachal depot until a few hours before their scheduled departures, moving to Mohakhali only to board passengers. Transport leaders confirmed that the system has noticeably reduced vehicle congestion in Mohakhali.
Traffic police officials and facility supervisors reported that over 150 buses visited the depot on Sunday alone, with drivers praising the improved security and amenities compared to the overcrowded conditions at Mohakhali.
