Bangladeshis have a higher average life expectancy than both Indians and Pakistanis, according to the latest figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The data shows that the average life expectancy in Bangladesh was 72.7 years in 2023, compared with 71 years in India and 68.2 years in Pakistan.
People in the United States and Canada have even higher life expectancies, at 78.5 years and 81.4 years, respectively.
However, a longer life expectancy does not necessarily mean people are living healthier lives. The number of years people live in good health remains lower than their overall life expectancy.
The United Nations health agency released the latest figures on Friday (October 2).
The data also shows that global life expectancy had almost returned to its pre-pandemic level by 2023. Global average life expectancy stood at 73.3 years in 2023, compared with 73.4 years in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
The pandemic caused a sharp decline in life expectancy worldwide. In 2021, global life expectancy fell to 71.5 years, largely due to the impact of COVID-19.
WHO Department of Data head Alain Labrique said the increase in life expectancy represents a major achievement in public health.
“The next challenge is to ensure that people can live longer while remaining in good health,” he said.
