A court has denied bail to Imrul Kayes Sumon, member secretary of Ishwardi municipal BNP, in a case filed over the alleged embezzlement of Tk 2.23 crore from Southeast Bank and sent him to jail.

Sumon appeared before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 in Pabna on Sunday and sought permanent bail. After hearing the plea, Judge Shahin Kabir rejected it and ordered that he be sent to Pabna District Jail.

According to court and police sources, Sumon is one of the prime accused in the case filed by Southeast Bank’s Ishwardi branch over the alleged embezzlement. The case is registered as GR-203/19.

He was sent to the district jail under tight police security after his bail plea was rejected.

According to the case and local sources, Sumon allegedly withdrew a large amount of money against a business cash credit facility from the bank and later went into hiding with his family.

Southeast Bank filed the case against him with Ishwardi Police Station on April 11, 2019.

During the investigation, information emerged about the alleged involvement of several bank officials. In June 2023, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed separate cases against five bank officials, accusing them of assisting in the embezzlement of Tk 1.77 crore.

The investigation report said Sumon had been provided overdraft and loan facilities without adequate collateral in violation of the bank’s rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, Sumon’s recent nomination as member secretary of Ishwardi municipal BNP has drawn criticism in local political circles.

Some grassroots BNP leaders have expressed dissatisfaction over the appointment of a person facing trial in bank loan and financial irregularity cases to an important party post.
