A 26-year-old shop worker was killed after an air-conditioner compressor exploded while he was repairing it at a shop in the capital’s Nayapaltan area on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Jibon Barman.
The accident occurred around 10:30AM at MI Engineering Plus, a refrigerator and air-conditioner repair shop.
Jibon was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital with critical injuries. The on-duty doctors declared him dead around 11:45AM.
Biplab Chandra Das, owner of the shop, said his refrigerator and AC repair business is located on the ground floor of a building in Nayapaltan. Several employees, including Jibon, lived on the second floor of the building.
Jibon had joined the shop only a few days ago. He was alone at the shop on Tuesday morning when the compressor suddenly exploded, leaving him critically injured, the owner said.
Jibon’s cousin Anik Marmon said their home is in Batpara Gopalpur village under Gaibandha Sadar upazila. Jibon’s father is Sachindra Barman.
Anik said Jibon had started working at MI Engineering Plus a few days earlier and was also staying at the shop. He was taken to hospital after being injured in the morning explosion but succumbed to his injuries.
Mohammad Habibur Rahman, inspector in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said the body had been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police of Paltan Police Station are investigating the incident, he added.
