A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed former Awami League MP Moshtak Ahmed Ruhin on a four-day remand in a murder case filed over the death of a courier service employee during the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order after investigating officer SI Zahidul Islam Kabir sought a seven-day remand for questioning.
Ruhin was produced before the court from jail. The prosecution, led by Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi, argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyer Mostafizur Rahman Talukder sought its cancellation and Ruhin’s bail.
According to the case statement, on July 19, 2024, Raju Ahmed, an employee of Janani Courier Service, was watching a protest in front of the courier service in the Banshbari area of Mohammadpur when he was hit by a bullet. He was later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Ruhin was arrested on September 23 after being detained by local leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal. He was sent to jail the following day.
The murder case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station on August 27, 2024.
Ruhin, a former central Jubo League leader, was elected MP from Netrokona-1 on the Awami League ticket in 2008 and 2024.
