Chinese intelligence services are using LinkedIn and other online job platforms to target people with access to sensitive information through fake job offers, according to a warning issued by the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

The warning said Chinese intelligence officers or their affiliates pose as recruiters, consultants or employees of legitimate-looking companies, think tanks and human resources firms outside China. They target government and military personnel as well as academics, journalists and others who may have access to classified or privileged information.

The recruitment often begins with fake job advertisements on LinkedIn, Indeed or Upwork. Recruiters review applicants’ CVs, conduct virtual interviews and may ask candidates to prepare trial reports on China’s foreign relations, Indo-Pacific defence or international trade.

According to the bulletin, successful candidates may later be pressured to provide increasingly sensitive information, with conversations shifted to encrypted messaging platforms. Recruits can be offered hundreds to several thousand dollars per report, with higher payments for more sensitive information.

The Five Eyes agencies urged job seekers to remain cautious about unsolicited offers and verify recruiters and companies before sharing information.

The alliance comprises the intelligence agencies of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. China has rejected similar espionage allegations.
