A murder accused escaped from the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court premises on Tuesday, marking his second escape, police said.
The accused, Shariful Islam, 22, fled while being taken to the court lock-up after appearing before Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jamsed Alam, said Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Prosecution Division Mahiuddin Mahmud Sohel.
Shariful had been brought to court for a hearing in a case filed over his previous escape. The hearing could not take place as the prosecution witness was absent.
After the proceedings, DMP constable Abdul Alim was escorting Shariful from the courtroom to the lock-up when he allegedly removed his handcuffs and fled the court premises.
Shariful had previously escaped on June 19, 2025, while being taken to the lock-up from the courtroom of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Dhaka. He allegedly assaulted police personnel, removed his handcuffs and fled. The then lock-up in-charge, Md Ripon Molla, later filed a case against him with Kotwali Police Station.
Police said efforts were underway to recapture Shariful and expressed hope that he would be arrested soon.
The latest incident comes days after another accused, Raja alias Pichchi Raja, escaped from a prison van. An investigation into that incident reportedly found the involvement of several police personnel, some of whom have since been arrested.
