Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) conducted a two-and-a-half-hour eviction drive in Mirpur-1 on Wednesday, removing around 2,000 illegal shops to free roads and sidewalks.
The drive ran from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM across areas extending from Shah Ali Mazar, Shah Ali Girls School and College Shopping Complex, and Chhinnamul Market to Fair Plaza, Muktijoddha Market, Bagdad, and Sony Hall. DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton inspected the drive on site.
Small traders faced severe distress following the eviction, arguing that removing them without providing alternative arrangements threatens their livelihoods.
Clothing trader Md Milon stated that authority should arrange alternatives before evicting small vendors who rely on daily earnings. Sagar, a jewelry vendor, echoed similar concerns, adding that hawkers are willing to relocate if suitable trade spaces are allocated.
DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton told reporters that the eviction forms part of a citywide initiative to clear all illegal structures and sidewalks obstructing pedestrian movement.
However, several vendors set up shops on the footpaths again within 30 minutes of the operation. An anonymous fruit seller explained that vendors returned to avoid stock spoilage, hoping to clear inventory while determining their next steps.
The drive follows a similar clearing operation in Mirpur-10, where clashes broke out between hawkers and police during the eviction.
