Detectives on Tuesday arrested three people in Mohammadpur area of the capital along with a huge quantity of adulterated and unauthorised medicines and manufacturing equipment.
The arrested men are Abdullah Al-Mamun, 42, Md Saju, 33, and Md Sajib, 26.
The matter was confirmed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday. Citing information from the Detective Branch’s (DB) Wari Division, DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Md Akter Hossain said a DB team conducted a raid on Tuesday following a tip-off at a flat on the third floor of a building in Block-C of Dhaka Udyan Road under Mohammadpur Police Station (PS) and arrested the three.
During the raid, the team also recovered a large quantity of adulterated medicines and packaging materials, including various syrups, capsules, shampoos, face washes, hygiene washes, soaps, powders and tablets, he said.
He added that the DB team also seized three cylinders, a fuel-filling machine, two capsule-filling machines, 10kg of fuel (polythene), six capsule-filling components and two moulds used for applying labels.
He further said some of the recovered items were syrups and liquid products intended for children. Such adulterated and unauthorised medicines could pose risks to children’s lives and health, and the matter is being investigated as a matter of priority.
A case has been filed against the three with Mohammadpur PS under the Special Powers Act for allegedly possessing the adulterated medicines for sale and distribution.
DB sources said an investigation is underway to identify the source, manufacturers and suppliers of the adulterated medicines, as well as anyone else involved in the operation.
