US President Donald Trump has said he believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote global peace since returning to office for a second term, but expressed uncertainty over whether the Norwegian Nobel Committee would award him the prize.
The announcement of the 2026 Nobel Prize winners began on October 5. Winners in medicine, physics and chemistry have already been announced, while the Nobel Peace Prize winner is due to be announced on Thursday (October 8).
Journalists asked Trump about his Nobel Peace Prize expectations at the Oval Office on Wednesday.
“I think I should get the Nobel. But I don’t know what they’re going to do. They have a reputation for not giving it to people like me,” Trump said.
Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the prestigious award since returning to the White House in 2025.
Last year’s Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado. After receiving the award, she gave her Nobel medal to Trump in January.
Recalling the gesture, Trump said he felt “very honoured” when Machado said he deserved the prize more than anyone else in history.
Trump claims he deserves this year’s prize for helping resolve eight international conflicts since he was sworn in on January 20, 2025.
Leaders from Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Trump, although there is no way to independently verify such claims because the Nobel Committee does not disclose nomination information.
Several parties involved in conflicts Trump claims to have helped resolve have disputed his role in the diplomatic efforts. Fighting has also resumed in some areas, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Trump has also failed to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, despite previously promising to do so on his first day back in the White House. Meanwhile, the conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel has continued for months, affecting global energy supplies and pushing up gas prices ahead of the US midterm elections.
Pope Leo is also reportedly among the potential contenders for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
