EC to set UP poll dates on Monday

The Election Commission will announce the dates for the upcoming Union Parishad elections on Monday, EC Commissioner Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah said on Thursday.

He made the statement at a press conference at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

“The commission will finalise the election dates at its meeting on Monday. We will announce how many phases the Union Parishad elections will be held in and the dates for each phase,” Sanaullah said.

Asked when the election schedule would be announced, he said the Election Commission itself would not announce the schedules.

“The district election officers will announce the schedules. We will only announce the phases,” he said.

Asked when the UP elections would be completed, the commissioner said the commission expected to finish all phases within the timeframe it had mentioned earlier.

On September 17, Sanaullah said the commission wanted to complete all Union Parishad elections by 6 June next year.

He also said the commission would hold talks with political parties after the election dates are finalised.
