Barrister Gias Uddin has been appointed as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister with the status of a Secretary, overseeing the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification on Thursday (October 8) confirming the contractual appointment, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Al-Bashirul Islam. Under the conditions of the appointment, Barrister Gias—also known as Gias Uddin Rimon—must relinquish all other professional, commercial, or institutional affiliations to serve for the duration of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's tenure or at his satisfaction.

The sudden induction of the academic and former law enforcement officer into this high-profile administrative capacity has sparked widespread interest across political and administrative circles.

Barrister Gias began his career in journalism, working with several national dailies including Daily Inqilab and Daily Jugantor. In 2003, he joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and served until 2009, holding key positions such as Senior Assistant Commissioner in the Uttara and Tejgaon zones of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He later transitioned into academia in the United Kingdom, serving as a Principal Lecturer in Police Education at Anglia Ruskin University and leading degree programs at the Kent and Essex Police College.

He has also taught and conducted research at several international institutions, including the University of Portsmouth, London Metropolitan University, and De Montfort University, while serving as the Academic Head and Head of Academic Integrity for the Degree Holder Entry Program across seven police forces in eastern England.
