Forensic DNA tests have confirmed the involvement of suspects Siddartha Das and Mugdha Das in the gruesome murder of retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family in Rangpur.

Sanatan Chakraborty, Deputy Commissioner (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, confirmed the findings to media on Thursday night (October 8).

The DB official stated that both suspects were transferred from Rangpur Jail to the CID office in Dhaka on September 21 for DNA sampling. Subsequent laboratory analysis matched their DNA with evidence gathered from the crime scene.

Sanatan Chakraborty noted that forensic analysis matched DNA on items recovered from the house—including dates, cucumbers, and cigarette butts—to Siddartha and Mugdha, definitively confirming their presence and involvement in the homicides.

CID crime scene investigators had originally collected 35 items of physical evidence during the recovery of the bodies on August 22. The evidence submitted to the forensic lab included a fruit-cutting knife, Yaba smoking foil, cigarette butts, naan bread, cucumbers, dates, sink stains, and handwriting found in a notebook belonging to Priyam, one of the young victims.

Although drug tests conducted nine days post-arrest returned negative results for both suspects, both Siddartha and Mugdha previously confessed to the killings in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The tragic incident came to light on the night of August 22, when police recovered the bodies of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, daughter, and son from their locked residence in the Daspara area of Rangpur city. Following the recovery, police arrested neighbours Mugdha Das and Siddartha Das.

Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of the late Ganapati Chakraborty, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. Three individuals—Simanta Das, a friend of the suspects, Bidyut Mohanta, a guard at the Dakhiganj crematorium, and Shanto Das, an alleged drug supplier—have given witness statements in court. The case is currently being investigated by the Rangpur Metropolitan Detective Branch.
