Cop among four held in Barishal drug raid

BARISHAL, Oct 9: A police officer was among four people detained during a drug raid at a house in Paichgaon Village of the district early Thursday.

Based on a tip-off, the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) conducted the raid, said officials. The detainees are ASI Delwar Hossain of Airport Police Station (PS), house owner Mirajul Islam, 25, Nahid Hasan, 26, and Fatema Akter Nurtaj, 30.

According to the DNC, a team led by Inspector Md Zahidul Islam raided Mirajul’s house in Raipasha-Karapur Union in Sadar Upazila around dawn. During the raid, several people tried to flee. At one point, ASI Delwar broke through part of the tin structure and jumped outside. He fell into the mud, and a scuffle followed when DNC officials tried to detain him. The DNC said they recovered drug-use paraphernalia from the house but found no significant quantity of drugs or any major consignment.

DNC Inspector Zahidul Islam said the police officer was later handed over to Airport PS Inspector Shahabuddin. The other three detainees were sent to jail through a court after undergoing drug tests, he said.

Locals’ allegation that Mirajul had been involved in drug dealing and harassment of residents could not be independently verified.
