US sanctions on ICC, hours after Nobel Peace Prize announcement

The Donald Trump administration has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) just hours after the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize, raising concerns over a possible escalation of diplomatic tensions between the United States and its European allies.

The measures were introduced on Friday, October 9.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the ICC would not be allowed to prosecute American citizens. He added that the measures would restrict the court’s transactions, assets and operational capabilities.

The ICC has begun developing alternative software, banking and health insurance arrangements to prepare for the potential impact of the sanctions.

The court has also called on the European Union to protect its member states from the effects of the measures.

Meanwhile, South African human rights activist and former judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay was awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced her name on Friday afternoon Bangladesh time in recognition of her contributions to peace and international law.

Announcing the award, the committee said it carried particular significance at a time when international law and the justice system were facing political attacks.

It highlighted the importance of holding war criminals accountable and ensuring justice for victims of torture.
