At least three Saudi nationals, including an airline captain, were killed and several others injured in an attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Riyadh airport, Saudi authorities confirmed on Friday.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place on Thursday, October 8, amid renewed hostilities between the two sides.
According to a Saudi government statement, the first attack targeted airport facilities on Thursday afternoon, while a second targeted an aircraft. The Houthis said they had used ballistic missiles to attack the airport, although the Saudi statement did not directly name those responsible.
Saudi flag carrier Saudia Group said one of those killed was Captain Hamoud Ali Al-Kalthami. The incident marked the first attack on the airline since the renewed conflict began.
In a separate statement, the airline said one of its aircraft was damaged while parked at the airport. No passengers were aboard the plane at the time.
Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said the casualties among Saudi nationals and foreign travellers ranged from minor to serious injuries.
Airport operations returned to normal at around 6:00 PM on Thursday, a few hours after the attack, according to Saudia Group.
The Houthis said Saudi Arabia had been targeted because of its support for government forces in Yemen’s renewed civil war. Riyadh, meanwhile, says it supports efforts by Yemen’s internationally recognised government to regain control of its territory.
