India’s Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) is set to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar despite police restrictions.
CJP founder Abhijit Deep said on Friday that the party would continue its protest despite the police refusing permission for the programme, Reuters reported.
Police said, permission had been denied considering the law and order situation. Around 23,000 police personnel have been deployed across Delhi ahead of the protest, while 57 metro stations in the capital have been closed. A total of 61 trains scheduled to travel to New Delhi Railway Station on Friday and Saturday have also been cancelled.
Meanwhile, police have ordered the suspension of internet services in the capital for 24 hours.
The CJP is demanding Kumar’s resignation over allegations that 130 million names have been removed from India’s electoral rolls. The opposition alliance, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has also been vocal against the controversial revision of voter lists.
Police have warned that legal action will be taken against protesters for demonstrating without permission.
“We will hold the protest. Jantar Mantar is a designated protest site. Article 19 of the Indian Constitution guarantees the right to protest. Why, then, is permission required?” Abhijit Deep said.
“When Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar removed 130 million voters from the electoral rolls, did he seek the people’s permission?” he added
