Senior journalist Amir Khasru, a former correspondent of Voice of America (VOA), died at the age of 65 on Saturday evening while undergoing treatment at the Super Specialised Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in the capital.
He was declared dead by doctors shortly before 7:00pm, according to his family members. Khasru had been hospitalised for several days due to a serious illness. He was most recently admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was undergoing treatment.
During his long career in journalism, Khasru worked for VoA and several other media outlets. He was also known as a columnist for the Bangla-language daily Ittefaq and Jugantor.
In March 2025, he was hospitalised in the cabin block of the then Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University after falling seriously ill. At the time, an urgent appeal was made for O-positive blood for his treatment.
A further appeal for blood for his treatment was made on October 10, 2026, before he was transferred to the ICU of the university’s Super Specialised Hospital.
