US President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to elect a new president, accusing Volodymyr Zelensky of failing to secure a peace deal with Russia.
Speaking at the White House on Saturday (October 10), Trump said Ukraine needed a leader who could negotiate an agreement to end the war, according to the Associated Press.
“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal,” Trump told reporters, adding that Zelensky had repeatedly failed to reach an agreement.
Trump also claimed that the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, would never have started had he been US president at the time.
His remarks came amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over a US-Russia agreement allowing Russian diesel supplies to reach the American market.
Zelensky has criticised the deal, warning that easing restrictions on Russian energy exports could provide Moscow with additional revenue to sustain its war against Ukraine.
The latest exchange has added to diplomatic tensions as US, Ukrainian and European officials continue discussions aimed at ending the conflict.
