The White House has rejected reports that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are considering resigning following the Republicans’ major defeat in the midterm elections.
Reports suggested that Hegseth could be removed over his handling of the Iran war, which President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have blamed for the Republicans’ electoral setback.
A Republican lawmaker has threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against Hegseth next week. However, Trump said he had no intention of removing the defence secretary, praising his performance.
Meanwhile, Rubio dismissed reports that he was considering stepping down to prepare for a possible 2028 presidential bid. Speaking to The New York Times, he said it had always been his plan to work with Trump until the end of his term.
The White House and the State Department described reports of Rubio’s possible resignation as “fake news”.
