Mobile users in Bangladesh can now stay connected in areas beyond conventional network coverage through Starlink-powered satellite-to-mobile services, introduced by Banglalink for compatible smartphones.
The service allows users to connect directly to satellites without purchasing a satellite phone, dish or external antenna. Bangladesh became the first country in South Asia to introduce the service following Banglalink’s partnership with Starlink, the satellite network operated by SpaceX.
How to get started
Users can follow these steps to access the service:
1. Use a compatible 4G smartphone
Customers need a supported 4G-enabled smartphone and an active Banglalink SIM. A separate satellite phone or special hardware is not required.
2. Install the MyBL app
Download and open Banglalink’s MyBL app on the phone. The app is used to access the service and its supported features.
3. Allow location access
Grant the MyBL app the required location permission when prompted. This helps the service determine the phone’s location for connectivity.
4. Enable data roaming if required
For satellite data connectivity, users should turn on data roaming in their phone’s network settings where instructed by Banglalink. They should also check that their mobile data settings are enabled.
5. Move to an area without conventional coverage
When the phone moves beyond the reach of Banglalink’s terrestrial network, it can connect to the satellite service where coverage is available. An unobstructed view of the sky can help reception.
The service is designed to connect automatically when the required conditions are met; users do not need to install a satellite dish or manually point their phones towards a satellite.
What can users do with the service?
The satellite-to-mobile connection is intended for essential communication when conventional mobile coverage is unavailable. Depending on the supported apps and service availability, users can send messages, share their locations and access selected digital services.
The service could prove particularly useful for fishermen, people working at sea, travellers and residents of remote islands, coastal areas and other locations with limited mobile coverage. It may also help people stay connected during natural disasters and prolonged power outages that disrupt conventional networks.
What does it cost?Banglalink announced a launch offer providing satellite connectivity with any internet or mixed bundle pack free of additional charges during the first month. From the second month, the benefit is available at no extra cost with selected monthly internet and mixed bundle packs.
Customers are also set to receive five free SMS messages per month for use over the satellite network. Users should check Banglalink’s latest package terms to confirm eligibility and applicable charges.
Important things to knowStarlink’s satellite-to-mobile service is different from the home broadband service that uses a dedicated satellite dish. It is designed to extend basic mobile connectivity, not replace conventional high-speed internet.
Not every phone or app is necessarily supported, and performance may vary depending on the handset, satellite coverage and surrounding obstacles. Users should check the supported-device and app lists on Banglalink’s official website before relying on the service.
