NEW DELHI, Oct 11: The Congress has asked all its Members of Parliament (MPs) to remain in Delhi on Monday, October 12, as the Opposition prepares for another round of protests over alleged electoral irregularities and the police action against demonstrators in the national capital.
The move follows Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s announcement that the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) will return to the streets on Monday. The alliance also plans to approach Chief Justice of India Surya Kant with a memorandum concerning the electoral controversy and Saturday’s treatment of protesters.
The Opposition’s renewed mobilisation comes after Delhi witnessed widespread detentions, restrictions on public movement and a heavy security deployment during demonstrations organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protests centre on allegations of irregularities in electoral rolls, particularly the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The Opposition has questioned the Election Commission’s conduct, while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rejected allegations of electoral wrongdoing.
In a series of posts on X on Saturday, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of attempting to silence students and young protesters who have raised questions about the electoral process.
Invoking the popular Bollywood villain Mogambo, portrayed by Amrish Puri in the 1987 film Mr India, Gandhi described the Prime Minister as “Mogambo Modi” and accused the government of suppressing dissent.
He also targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah over allegations that Delhi Police personnel and workers associated with the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had assaulted protesters.
“Amit Shah’s Delhi Police has not only resorted to thuggery itself but is also giving a free hand and encouragement to the real goons of the RSS-BJP to perpetrate violence against women and the youth,” Gandhi alleged.
India Travel Guides The Congress leader warned that attempts to intimidate protesters would strengthen their resolve rather than weaken the agitation.
“As I had said, the more ‘Mogambo Modi’ and his government try to suppress them, the more the anger of Gen Z and the students will intensify,” he said.
Gandhi also issued a direct challenge to Shah, declaring that the Opposition would continue its agitation regardless of the number of police personnel deployed.
“We will not be intimidated. We will not back down. This fight will not stop now!” he said.
Apart from the street demonstrations, Gandhi announced plans to approach Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday to raise concerns over the alleged use of force against protesters and the broader electoral controversy.
He questioned whether institutions responsible for protecting constitutional rights could remain silent in the face of what he described as attacks on democracy.
“Will the Constitution be reduced to tatters while we remain silent? That will absolutely not happen. We will ensure accountability!” Gandhi said."ANN
