A fire broke out at Manzur Khan Plaza in the capital’s Chawkbazar area on Monday afternoon, prompting nine Fire Service units to rush to the scene to bring the blaze under control.
Shahjahan Hossain, duty officer at the FSCD control room, said the number of units was increased to nine as firefighters struggled to contain the flames.
“Narrow lanes are preventing our large vehicles from entering. Heavy smoke and a shortage of water are making it difficult to control the fire,” he said.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Officer Talha Bin Jasim said the service received information about the fire at 5:04pm. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 5:22pm and began operations.
According to Jasim, the fire originated at a shop on the market’s sixth floor. Three Fire Service units initially responded, with the number later increased to nine.
Fire Service officials could not immediately determine the cause of the fire or assess the extent of the damage.
