Bangladesh is observing the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction today (October 13) with the national theme "Let us start from home to build a disaster-resilient nation" (Ghor theke-i shuru kori, durjog sohonshil desh gori).

To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has organized a discussion meeting at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, according to an official press release issued by the ministry.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will attend the event as the chief guest. Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister M. Iqbal Hossain, and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Munshi Rafiqul Alam are scheduled to attend as special guests.

The day will also be observed across all divisional, district, and upazila levels with due importance, while special television programs will be broadcast to highlight the significance of disaster risk reduction.

Highlighting the objectives of the day, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu emphasized Bangladesh's vulnerability to natural hazards:
"Due to its geographic position along the Bay of Bengal, network of rivers, adverse impacts of climate change, and high population density, Bangladesh remains one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. Cyclones, floods, storm surges, riverbank erosion, landslides, fires, and earthquakes are an inevitable reality here. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief steps forward during such crises. The objective of observing this day is to deliver relief and peace to people through adequate disaster preparedness."
