Israel has offered to join military operations against Yemen’s Houthi rebels, but Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has rejected the proposal, according to Israeli media reports.
The request was reportedly conveyed through US mediation, with Riyadh opposing direct Israeli military involvement over concerns that cooperation with Israel could trigger a public backlash in Saudi Arabia.
The Israeli newspaper 'Haaretz', citing an unnamed diplomatic source, reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought Saudi approval for Israel to participate in the campaign against the Houthis.
Another source familiar with the matter said Israel hoped military cooperation with Saudi Arabia would strengthen bilateral ties and pave the way for a future normalisation agreement.
Saudi Arabia and Israel do not have formal diplomatic relations. Riyadh has maintained that normalisation depends on progress towards resolving the Palestinian issue, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The reported proposal comes amid escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, including strikes on airports that have caused casualties and disrupted air travel.
Saudi authorities had not publicly commented on the reported rejection as of Wednesday (October 14).
