An explosion followed by a fire at a Grameen Bank branch in Netrokona Sadar upazila early Wednesday damaged two motorcycles and several documents, police said.
The incident occurred at the bank’s Chuchua branch in Mougati Union in the early hours of Wednesday. Firefighters later rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.
The branch’s night guard, Ain Uddin, told reporters that he heard a sound resembling a bomb explosion while preparing for Fajr prayers. He later found a room in the office on fire and immediately informed senior officials.
Ranjan Kumar Kundu, the branch’s microcredit officer, said the fire service was alerted as soon as the night guard reported the incident. Firefighters subsequently arrived and extinguished the blaze. A bottle containing petrol was also recovered from the scene, he said.
Police and other law enforcement personnel inspected the damaged branch following the incident.
Netrokona Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Khayer said the incident was under investigation. He added that investigators had yet to determine whether the fire was accidental or had been deliberately set. Further details would be available after the investigation, he said.
