The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew offers a new take on C.S. Lewis’s fantasy world, featuring Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan and Led Zeppelin’s iconic song Stairway to Heaven.
The film will be the first screen adaptation of Lewis’s 1955 novel, which explores the creation of Narnia and the origins of the White Witch.
One of the trailer’s most striking elements is the use of Stairway to Heaven during scenes depicting the magical world. The film marks the first time Led Zeppelin has licensed the song for a movie. Gerwig reportedly met band members Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to seek permission, and they agreed after recognising the heart of the story.
The trailer also introduces Emma Mackey as Jadis, the character who eventually becomes the White Witch. An image released by Empire magazine shows her screaming on a historic street as windows shatter and cars crumple around her.
Streep voices Aslan, the great lion who appears as a cosmic presence with differently coloured eyes and red markings inspired by David Bowie. The trailer shows the lion taking shape against a backdrop of stars as Stairway to Heaven plays.
Unlike the early 20th-century setting of the original novel, Gerwig’s adaptation is set in 1955, the year the book was published. Vintage cars, double-decker buses and period details feature in the film’s visual setting.
The story follows Digory and Polly, two children who discover magical rings that transport them between worlds. Their journey takes them to the Wood between the Worlds, where they witness the creation of Narnia and events that shape the kingdom’s future.
The film also includes a reference to The Eagle and Child, a historic Oxford pub where the Inklings, a literary group that included Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, met to discuss their writing.
Gerwig has said the novel stayed with her from childhood, particularly its concept of a cosmic lion singing a world into existence. She described adapting the story as an honour, saying its themes of magic, hidden worlds and adventure had shaped her imagination.
The cast includes David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell as Digory and Polly, Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew and Carey Mulligan as Mabel, Digory’s ailing mother. Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma also feature.
Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously worked with Gerwig on Barbie, are composing music for the film.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled to open in IMAX and cinemas worldwide on February 12, 2027, with exclusive IMAX previews beginning on February 10. The film is set to stream on Netflix from April 2, 2027.
