HBO’s Lanterns has recorded the lowest audience score among DC Universe projects on Rotten Tomatoes, earning 69% despite receiving a 91% rating from professional critics.
According to the review aggregation website’s listing on October 13, the series received a 69% Popcornmeter score based on more than 2,500 audience ratings, while its Tomatometer score stood at 91% from 86 reviews.
The audience score places Lanterns behind other DC Universe projects, including the second season of Peacemaker, which has a 79% audience score, and Supergirl, at 72%, according to a report published by TVLine on October 12.
The series has faced criticism for taking a grounded detective approach to the Green Lantern mythology instead of focusing on colourful intergalactic adventures and large-scale superhero action.
The story follows rookie Green Lantern John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, as they investigate a murder in rural America.
Some viewers have argued that the detective-driven narrative fails to deliver the cosmic spectacle expected from a Green Lantern adaptation. Others have criticised Jordan’s cynical and weary characterisation, which differs from the more upbeat portrayal familiar to some comic book readers.
However, the series has received stronger reviews from professional critics, with its 91% Tomatometer score highlighting a significant divide between critical reception and audience response.
Rotten Tomatoes scores may change as additional audience ratings are submitted.
