All scheduled banks across Bangladesh will remain open on Saturday (October 17) to adjust the holidays announced for Durga Puja Bangladesh Bank said.

According to a circular issued recently by the central bank, all scheduled banks will remain closed from October 20 to 22 on the occasion of the Hindu community's largest religious festival, Sharadiya Durga Puja.

The circular, signed by Bangladesh Bank Director (SDAD) Md Abdul Mannan, said the decision followed a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on October 7.

Banks operating in Bangladesh will remain open on October 17 according to their regular schedules, while the three-day holiday will run from Tuesday to Thursday.

The circular also stated that bank branches and booths located in seaports, land ports, airports and customs areas must maintain limited import-export operations during the holidays, in line with the central bank's existing instructions. Banks may take necessary measures in consultation with local administrations and port or customs authorities.

The directive was issued in the public interest under Section 45 of the Bank Company Act, 1991.

Earlier, the government extended the Durga Puja holiday by one day on October 7. Under the original 2026 holiday calendar, October 20 was scheduled as a holiday for Maha Navami and October 21 for Bijoya Dashami. The Cabinet later approved an additional holiday on October 22.

With October 23 and 24 falling on Friday and Saturday, respectively, the extended holiday will give people a five-day break from October 20 to 24.

To compensate for the additional holiday, October 17's weekly holiday has been cancelled. Government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private offices will also remain open on that day.
