Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) has initiated plans to bring its entire campus under solar power generation in a bid to increase renewable energy usage and reduce escalating electricity costs, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Golam Rabbani announced on Thursday (October 15).
Prof Dr Golam Rabbani stated that an Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratory was recently established at the university at a cost of approximately Tk 3.5 crore under the supervision of the University Grants Commission (UGC). As part of the facility, a 900-square-foot solar power system was installed at an expenditure of Tk 18 lakh.
The installed solar unit is projected to generate nearly 23,000 units of electricity annually, averaging around 63 units daily. The production cost of this solar power stands at approximately Tk 3.50 per unit, compared to nearly Tk 10 per unit under the conventional grid supply.
Commending the government's initiatives to promote solar energy, the Vice Chancellor observed that transitioning the entire campus to solar power in the future would significantly slash the university's power expenses while paving the way for a sustainable, eco-friendly environment.
He also called upon universities to prioritize research and innovation aimed at tackling climate change and fostering sustainable economic frameworks.
