Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has said the Hindu community played a major role in the BNP’s victory, adding that both he and the prime minister believe this.
He made the remarks at an exchange meeting with members of the Hindu community at his residence on Al Mahmud Avenue in Hosenpur neighbourhood of Sirajganj on Thursday night (October 16), marking the upcoming Durga Puja.
Tuku said communal harmony had deteriorated in Bangladesh in the name of secularism compared with the period of Pakistan. He said people could have been born into different religious communities simply by chance and stressed that the Creator is one, regardless of religion.
Addressing the Hindu community, the minister said it was their responsibility to protect and support them. He claimed that the government had done more for the community in the past eight months than any government had done in the previous 15 years.
Regarding the prime minister’s planned visits to Durga Puja venues, Tuku said the government would set an example by having the head of government visit puja mandaps across the country.
Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Md Aminul Islam, Police Superintendent Md Saiful Islam Santu, Additional Superintendent of Police of Sadar Circle Nazran Rauf and others attended the meeting.
