A rickshaw puller was killed and two others were injured after a private car driven by a student of Rajshahi University (RU) ran them over in the city’s Talaimari area on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 2:00 PM on October 16.

The deceased was identified as Md Shahjalali, 50. Dr Shamim Hasan, spokesperson for Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, confirmed his death.

The student allegedly involved in the incident was identified as SM Rizon, a student of the Department of International Relations from the 2021-22 academic session. He is also the proprietor of an establishment named ‘Bengal Signature’.

According to eyewitnesses, Rizon was driving his private car at high speed on Friday afternoon. The car first hit a female pedestrian, throwing her to one side of the road. He then lost control of the vehicle and ran over two rickshaw pullers. One of them died on the spot.

Dr Shamim Hasan, spokesperson for Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said, “A total of three people came to our hospital for treatment. One of them has died. The other two are receiving treatment and are currently admitted to the hospital.”

Following the incident, local residents detained Rizon along with the car. Police later arrived at the scene and took him and the vehicle to the police station.

Gaziur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), said, “As people began gathering at the scene, he was taken to the police station along with the car to maintain normalcy.”

He added that further legal action would be taken if the allegations against Rizon were substantiated during interrogation.

Asked whether a case had been filed against Rizon, Gaziur Rahman said, “No case has been filed yet. He will be questioned first.”
