A former army member and journalist was shot dead by unidentified assailants in public in Durgapur upazila of Netrokona on Thursday night. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest those involved.
Lutfuzzaman Alif Fakir, 31, was shot dead at Utrail Bazar on the Shyamganj-Birishiri road under Durgapur Municipality at around 8:30 PM.
Alif was a resident of Sunai village under Pogla Union in Kalmakanda upazila. After retiring from the army, he worked as the Netrokona correspondent of private internet protocol television (IPTV) channel Rupshee Bangla. He also ran a Facebook page named ‘Detective Article’, where he regularly wrote about local irregularities, corruption and criminal activities.
According to eyewitnesses and police, Alif was at a shop in Utrail Bazar around 8:00 PM when two masked youths arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on him indiscriminately. Hearing the gunshots, locals rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee on their motorcycle.
Locals rescued him in critical condition and took him to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Durgapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khandaker Shaker Ahmed Khan said five bullet wounds were found on different parts of the journalist’s body, including his head, neck and chest.
After the autopsy, the body was handed over to his family. He was buried at his family graveyard following funeral prayers at his village home.
Netrokona Superintendent of Police Md Tarikul Islam visited the scene after receiving the news. Speaking at around 9:30 PM, he said the killing was initially believed to have been premeditated.
“Several police teams have already launched a comprehensive operation to identify and arrest the perpetrators,” he said.
Alif had previously been attacked over his professional duties and writings. On November 10 last year, a group of assailants hacked him with sharp weapons near the Teribazar ferry terminal on the Someshwari River in Durgapur, leaving him seriously injured.
The killing has sparked anger and fear among local journalists, who have demanded the immediate arrest of those involved and exemplary punishment.
