Eighteen new broad-gauge passenger railway coaches imported from India arrived in Bangladesh through the Darshana International Railway route in Chuadanga on Friday.

The coaches entered Bangladesh at around 2:30 PM on October 16, according to railway sources.

Bangladesh signed an agreement with India's RITES Limited on May 20, 2024, to procure broad-gauge railway coaches under a project. The agreement was later amended on November 11, 2025.

After arriving at Darshana station, the coaches underwent initial inspections, customs clearance and other necessary official procedures.

Following security checks and other formalities, the coaches will be taken to the Saidpur Railway Workshop in Nilphamari. They will undergo initial coupling, performance tests and other technical procedures before being added to the passenger train fleet.

Railway sources said the coaches were procured through RITES Limited as part of efforts to expand Bangladesh Railway's fleet. The 18 coaches, comprising four types, are the first shipment under an agreement between Bangladesh and India for the supply of 200 broad-gauge railway coaches.

The shipment includes 11 non-air-conditioned Shovon Chair coaches, three air-conditioned chair coaches, two air-conditioned sleeper coaches and two air-conditioned power cars. The power cars have separate compartments for guards and facilities for carrying passengers' luggage.

Robiul Islam, mechanical engineer of the Paksey Railway Division, said the coaches departed from Ranaghat station in West Bengal and reached Darshana after completing the necessary formalities at the Gede checkpoint.

He added that the coaches would subsequently be transported to the Saidpur Railway Workshop for further technical work.

The coaches began their journey on October 12 from Kapurthala in Punjab, India.
