Women at 40: Eat well to stay fit, healthy

Turning 40 is an important stage in a woman’s life when the body gradually begins to change. Hormonal fluctuations, declining muscle mass, changes in metabolism and reduced bone density can affect health and body composition. Some women may experience weight gain, irregular periods, sleep difficulties, mood changes and reduced energy.

However, reaching 40 does not mean that poor health is inevitable. A balanced diet, regular physical activity and preventive healthcare can help women stay healthy and active as they age.

Women in their 40s and beyond should pay particular attention to cardiovascular health, high blood pressure, diabetes, abdominal obesity and bone health. The menopausal transition can also affect sleep, mood and body composition, making healthy lifestyle habits increasingly important.

Nutrition plays a vital role in managing these changes:  Women should include a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses and protein-rich foods in their daily meals. Green leafy vegetables, carrots, tomatoes, beans, pumpkin and other seasonal vegetables provide essential vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Fish, eggs, chicken, milk, yoghurt, lentils, chickpeas and beans are valuable sources of protein. Adequate protein intake helps maintain muscle mass and strength, which become increasingly important with age.

Calcium and vitamin D are also essential for bone health, particularly during and after menopause. Milk, yoghurt and small fish eaten with their bones can provide calcium. Eggs and fatty fish contribute vitamin D, although some women may require supplements depending on their individual needs.

Fruits such as guava, papaya, oranges and other seasonal varieties provide vitamins, minerals and fibre. Whole fruits are generally preferable to fruit juice. Nuts and seeds can also be included in moderate amounts because they provide protein, healthy fats and essential minerals.

Women do not need to eliminate rice or carbohydrates after 40. Instead, they should pay attention to portion sizes and choose whole grains and high-fibre foods more often. A balanced meal can include vegetables, fish or another protein source, and a moderate portion of rice or whole grains.

Limiting excess sugar, salt, deep-fried foods, highly processed snacks and foods high in unhealthy fats is equally important. Excessive salt intake can contribute to high blood pressure, while frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks may increase the risk of weight gain and other health problems.

Extreme dieting is not recommended. Severe calorie restriction can compromise nutritional intake and muscle mass. The goal should be to eat nutritious food in appropriate portions rather than simply eating less.

Healthy eating should go hand in hand with an active lifestyle: Regular physical activity, including strength-building and weight-bearing exercises, helps maintain muscle strength, bone health and cardiovascular fitness. Adequate sleep, stress management and avoiding tobacco also contribute to overall well-being.

Women should monitor their blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels and discuss appropriate health screenings with their healthcare providers. Those with a family history of osteoporosis, early menopause or other risk factors may need additional assessment.

Turning 40 should not be viewed as the beginning of physical decline. It is an opportunity to make informed choices about nutrition and lifestyle. A balanced diet, regular exercise and preventive healthcare can help women maintain strength, independence and a better quality of life in the years ahead.
