The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka observed the National Immigration Day of Algeria on Saturday, in memory of the Algerian demonstrators killed by French police repression in Paris on October 17, 1961.
The commemoration at the Embassy began with the raising of the national flag to the tune of Algeria’s national anthem.
On the 65th anniversary of that massacre during French colonial rule, the martyrs’ sacrifices, the desire for independence and the question of human rights have come into renewed focus. The theme of this year’s commemoration was named as “From the Depths of Memory to the Horizons of the Future.”
Algerian Ambassador Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, in his welcome address recalled the October 17, 1961 event.
Ambassador Dr. Saidani said that the struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh for independence and the establishment of human dignity are historically similar.
The peoples of both countries fought to establish freedom, justice and the right to self determination after experiencing colonial rule and oppression.
