Bollywood actor Imran Khan has approached the Bombay High Court challenging a notice directing him to leave India by October 28, arguing that the order was arbitrary, disproportionate and unconstitutional.
The 44-year-old actor, a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, filed a writ petition on Saturday against the notice issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) on October 14 over his alleged violation of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
The notice followed Khan’s participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. He was briefly detained during the demonstration.
In his petition, Khan argued that the notice was issued without giving him an opportunity to be heard or following due legal process. He also contended that his status as an OCI cardholder and his legal rights had not been properly considered.
His lawyers maintained that no blanket legal prohibition prevents OCI cardholders from participating in peaceful protests, challenging the grounds for the order.
Khan has asked the court to quash the notice and immediately stay its implementation. He has also sought interim protection against any coercive action while the petition is pending.
The petition is expected to be taken up for an urgent hearing on Monday, according to Indian media reports.
