State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed has described the death sentences reportedly handed to two Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia as a major lesson, urging Bangladeshis living abroad to abide by the laws of their host countries.
She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday afternoon, October 17.
Obaed said the Bangladesh government had yet to receive official information about the reported death sentences. However, it had sent a letter to the Saudi authorities seeking details of the cases.
“From our past experience, Saudi Arabia has its own legal framework. If someone commits a serious offence, the accused are punished under that legal system,” she said.
The state minister said the labour wing of the Bangladesh mission in Saudi Arabia had conveyed that the two Bangladeshis were allegedly involved in an act of adultery inside a mosque in the holy city of Makkah, which is considered a serious offence under Saudi law.
She said the Saudi court had taken action under the country’s legal framework, but the Bangladesh government had not yet received any official information about the cases.
The government has written to the Saudi authorities to obtain details about the two Bangladeshis and the circumstances surrounding their reported sentences, she added.
