President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that standing against and defeating injustice, oppression, and dishonesty forms the core philosophy of Durga Puja.
The President made these remarks on Sunday (October 18) during his visit to the Ramna Kali Temple in Dhaka on the occasion of Sharadiya Durgotsav and Bijoya Dashami 2026.
He said, "We can say in a very firm and loud voice that I do not know if the communal harmony that exists in Bangladesh can be found anywhere else in the world."
The President added that at a time when conflict, strife, and hatred prevail across the globe, the ability of the Hindu community in Bangladesh to celebrate their religious festival Durga Puja in a peaceful environment stands as a bright example of communal harmony and mutual coexistence.
Extending Durga Puja greetings to the Hindu community, the President described Durga Puja as one of their major religious festivals, emphasizing that it teaches justice, peace, harmony, and human welfare.
He remarked that evil forces emerged repeatedly in this country, and the people of Bangladesh defeated them every time.
Highlighting the history of the Ramna Kali Temple, he recalled that attempts were made to destroy it in 1971, and it was subsequently demolished in 1973. He noted that those who spoke of secularism carried out this act. Later in 2001, under the direction of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and the initiative of Babu Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, the Ramna Kali Temple was re-established and efforts began to restore its ancient heritage.
During his speech, he remembered former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia with deep respect.
Calling upon everyone to remain united in protecting the country's communal harmony, he pointed out that Bangladesh's communal harmony is frequently misrepresented and subjected to propaganda.
He assured that the current government will work sincerely to resolve the issues currently faced by the Hindu community.
The President wished the festival success and thanked the performers of the cultural program.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Ethnic Minority Affairs Bijon Kanti Sarkar, Ramna Temple President Arpana Roy Das, and General Secretary Milton Baidya were present on the occasion.
During the event, Ramna Temple member Subhash Chandra Das honored the President with an uttariya (ceremonial scarf).
