A 24-year-old youth from Chandina upazila in Cumilla district was killed while fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war.

The deceased was identified as Md Sagar, son of Md Kabir Hossain of Chhaykot area under Chandina municipality. He was the youngest among three sisters and two brothers.

Family members said a friend of Sagar in Russia informed his sister over the telephone on Saturday regarding his death, casting a pall of gloom over the family.

Local sources said Sagar previously worked as a rickshaw-van driver for a rod and cement shop in Chandina to support his low-income family. In mid-2025, with the assistance of a manager from that shop, he moved to Russia after spending around Tk 6 lakh.

In Russia, he secured employment at a bakery earning a monthly salary of around Tk 70,000. While working there, he came into contact with a Bangladeshi broker who lured him with an offer of a lump-sum payment of Tk 30 lakh to enlist in the Russian military. Sagar subsequently joined the Russia-Ukraine conflict in May this year, after which all communication with his family ceased.

Sagar's uncle, Abdul Awal, stated that he had advised Sagar against leaving the bakery job to join the military. He alleged that brokers misled the youth into joining the conflict as a combatant.

Sagar's father, Kabir Hossain, a former vegetable vendor suffering from chronic illnesses, said he borrowed heavily to send his son abroad and had been unable to contact him for the past four to five months.

Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Ashraful Haq said the local administration was initially unaware of the incident and will look into the matter.
