Bangladesh and Pakistan have discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, education, research and cultural exchange, as both countries seek to take their relationship forward with a future-oriented approach.

The issues were discussed at a meeting between Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider at the opposition leader’s official residence at 29 Minto Road in Dhaka on Monday.

The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of mutual cooperation. The Pakistani envoy said relations between the two countries had been moving in a positive direction, citing increased bilateral trade and visits by officials at different levels.

Haider also briefed Shafiqur Rahman on the ongoing activities of the Knowledge Corridor project. The meeting was informed that a delegation of Bangladeshi academics had recently visited Pakistan to learn about its education system and institutional framework, expressing satisfaction with the experience.

Both sides discussed opportunities to expand trade and investment, strengthen academic and research partnerships, promote cultural exchanges and develop cooperation in areas of shared interest.

The Pakistani high commissioner expressed interest in advancing relations between the two countries through a forward-looking approach. The meeting also underscored the importance of maintaining regular communication and pursuing positive initiatives to deepen bilateral engagement.

Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Muhammad Wasif and Political Counsellor Kamran Dangal attended the meeting. Ali Ahmad Mabrur, a member of the opposition leader’s foreign affairs advisory committee, was also present.

The meeting comes amid efforts to broaden Bangladesh-Pakistan engagement beyond diplomatic contacts, with trade, education and people-to-people exchanges emerging as areas for further cooperation.
