A day of disappointment for Bangladesh's para athletes

Bangladesh endured a frustrating day at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games on Tuesday, with two sprinters failing to progress in the men's T47 100 metres and Asian Youth Para Games double gold medallist Chaiti Rani finishing sixth in the shot put.

Parvez Mia finished fifth among six runners after losing crucial ground at the start. He received a yellow card before the race and, shaken by the warning, hesitated when the starting signal came.

"I was mentally affected after receiving the yellow card. I delayed my start because I was afraid of a false start and fell behind," Parvez said.

Imtiaz endured an even harsher setback, being disqualified after two false starts. Competing without one hand, he struggled to maintain his balance and repeatedly leaned to one side.

"I came this far to compete, but I could not even run," said Imtiaz, wiping away tears after leaving the track.

Coach Al Amin said the athletes had worked hard but appeared to feel the pressure of a major continental event.

Chaiti, who won gold in the 100m and javelin at last year's Asian Youth Para Games, could not reproduce that success in the shot put. She finished sixth after a relatively modest performance.

Al Amin said Bangladesh had prepared her for shot put and discus for two months because her two gold-medal events from the Youth Games are not on the Asian Para Games programme.

In para archery, Juma Akter and Al Amin Hossain were eliminated in the pre-quarter-finals.

Chaiti will compete in the discus throw on Wednesday, while Selim Reza will contest the men's T44 high jump.
