Bangladesh were bundled out for a modest 160 in 41.2 overs against Afghanistan in their crucial tri-series ODI match in Sharjah on Wednesday, despite a resilient partnership between Parvez Hossain Emon and Saif Hassan.
Elected to bat first after winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy saw his decision backfire as the top order collapsed rapidly, leaving the side struggling at 28 for four.
Opener Tanjid Hasan Tamim was caught behind for just one run off six balls in the second over, while Soumya Sarkar fell for a golden duck off his first delivery. Najmul Hossain Shanto managed 15 runs before edging to the wicketkeeper, and skipper Towhid Hridoy returned without scoring after offering a return catch to Azmatullah Omarzai off his second ball.
From a precarious position, Parvez Hossain Emon and Saif Hassan rebuilt the innings with a steady 93-run partnership off 146 deliveries. Emon completed his half-century, but Saif lost his patience on 41 while trying to charge Mohammad Nabi, holing out in the deep.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz followed soon after, scoring just two runs attempting an ambitious shot. Emon continued his lonely battle before falling leg-before to Rashid Khan's leg-spin for a well-made 70 off 96 balls, including five boundaries and two sixes.
Following Emon's dismissal, the lower order folded quickly. For Afghanistan, leg-spinner Rashid Khan claimed four wickets, while Azmatullah Omarzai and Yamin Ahmadzai took two wickets each.
