Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has praised Bangladeshi scientist Dr Firdausi Qadri for her life-saving research on oral cholera vaccines, highlighting its role in preventing outbreaks and expanding access to affordable healthcare.
In a video message, Gates highlighted the importance of oral cholera vaccines in controlling the deadly disease, particularly in densely populated communities with limited access to safe water and sanitation.
Qadri, a senior scientist at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), has spent decades researching affordable vaccines and strategies to prevent cholera.
She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2021 in recognition of her contributions to public health.
Gates has long supported efforts to expand access to oral cholera vaccines through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and its public health partnerships.
