Six people were detained over separate murder incidents in Naogaon and Pabna districts in two days.
NAOGAON: Police have arrested five people, including a 65-year-old woman’s younger brother and his wife, over her murder in the district, allegedly motivated by greed for her gold earrings, savings and livestock, as well as grievances over drug dealing and a land dispute.
Halima Begum’s bloodied body was found on October 19 beside a paddy field near a bamboo grove in Chhilimpur Village, police said on Wednesday. One earlobe had been severed and the other torn.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Tarikul Islam told a news conference that the suspects had allegedly planned the killing five days earlier. On the night of October 18, they lured Halima from her home, tied her with rope and strangled her with her scarf before removing her gold earrings and abandoning her body.
The arrested are her younger brother, Majnu Rahman, 56, and his wife, Hosne Ara, 42, along with Robiul Islam, 39, Hamidur Rahman, 55, and Mosharraf Hossain, 45.
According to police, Halima, who was separated from her husband and had no children, lived in a makeshift hut behind her brother’s house. She supported herself through domestic work and raising livestock and poultry.
Investigators said Majnu and his wife coveted her savings and animals, while Robiul was angered by her objections to local drug dealing. Hamidur and Mosharraf allegedly held a longstanding grudge over a land dispute.
Police seized a rope and scarf allegedly used in the killing. The five arrestees have been sent to court after legal proceedings, the SP said.
