Six Bangladeshi youths returned home through the Benapole border checkpoint on Thursday (October 22) after serving three to five years in an Indian prison for illegal entry.
Indian police handed them over to Benapole Immigration Police in the presence of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) officials.
According to Benapole Immigration Police, the six had entered India illegally through the Jashore border while seeking work and later lived in Jammu and Kashmir. They were arrested and sentenced by an Indian court before being held at Kot Bhalwal Jail.
After completing their sentences, they were repatriated following legal procedures at the request of Bangladeshi authorities.
The returnees were identified as Mohammad Ali, Jahangir Alam, Abdul Karim, Abdul Sabur, Mohammad Sabbir Islam and Mohammad Hafizur Rahman. They are from Bogura, Gazipur, Cox’s Bazar and Sunamganj districts.
Saifur Rahman, in-charge of Benapole Immigration Police, confirmed the handover, adding that the six were later placed in the custody of their respective relatives.
